Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder is most associated with deficits in communication, interpersonal skills, social interactions, and sensory processing; each child's abilities and experiences of challenges present differently.

According to the CDC the autism prevalence has increased dramatically to 1 in 36 children and is the fastest-growing neurodevelopment disorder, autism can be detected at up to 18 months of age.

Common Characteristics

Characteristics of Autism are wide-ranging, strengths and challenges may affect:

  • Communication

  • Social interaction 

  • Play skills

  • Sensory hypersensitivity, hyposensitivity

  • Behaviour

  • Following routine

  • Academic skill development

  • Speech development

  • Restrictive or repetitive behaviours 

Common Signs

  • Regression of speech development

  • Lack of development in speech

  • Does not respond to name

  • Little/no eye contact

  • Playing with toys in an unusual or limited manner

  • Lining toys up/grouping together

  • Stacking toys 

  • Repetitive behaviours

  • Playing alone

  • Lack of awareness to danger

What to do if your child does not have a diagnosis

If you are concerned that your child might have autism, make an appointment with a developmental pediatrician or set up a psychological or neurological evaluation with a specialist to confirm a diagnosis.
